Considered one of founders of the English novel, English novelist and journalist Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) exposes a story od a man shipwrecked alone on an island, in his well-known work Robinson Crusoe (1719). Based on the real life of Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk (1676-1712) who spent four years on an uninhabited island, Robinson Cruose is interpreted as an embodiment of British imperialist values.
